The 2012 Mariah Moore "The Eskrimadora" calendar is Mariah's fundraiser to help fund my training, travel, and all other expenses associated with the 2012 WEKAF USA National Championships to be held in Las Vegas NV and the 2012 WEKAF World Championships(location TBD). The calendar is loaded with kicks, weapons, and action. This is a unique 12 month calendar showing the multiple sides of me including highlights from all three styles I train in(Arnis, Kyokushin, and TKD). All photos have been handpicked by me! Many of the photos were taken by world renown photographer "KICKPICS." Includes pullout centerfold. I will autograph the calendar at your request! 10% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Adult Congenital Heart Association in the names of Mariah's friend and fellow martial artist Mark Cummings who was born with only half a heart(but twice the determination!) and her cousin Jason Merchant(1980-2008) who was lost to complications resulting from heart defect he was born with.

I just wanted to take some time to thank every single person who has supported me throughout my martial arts career. Your support and encouragement keeps me going and without every single one of you, I would not be where I am today. I cannot tell you how great it feels to have the support of my family, community, and fellow martial artists! I have accomplished a lot in the 9 years that I have been training, but this is only the beginning! I plan on not just reaching for the moon, but rather past the stars.
I am so truly grateful for every single person who has prayed for me, followed me during my many journeys, supported my dreams, and encouraged me to do greater and better things.

D-Lux Charity Challenge 2011

I'd like to start off by saying that I LOVE THE D-LUX CHARITY CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT! I have gone for 3 years in a row now, and I do have to say that Sensei Adam Lux does a great job at keeping the tournament classy and run smooth.
This year I decided, what the heck!, I'll compete in ALL of the divisions! I placed 1st in Traditional weapons performing with the sickles on ropes, 1st in open weapons performing with the tali-bong to the song "Faint" by Linkin Park, 2nd in open forms performing the form Sabayon to the song "Remember The Name" by Fort Minor.....and the most exciting news?! I WON BLACK BELT GRAND CHAMPION FOR THE 3rd YEAR IN A ROW!!!!!! I was so incredibly excited! I worked my butt off for it too!, and there was great competition!

I traveled with my friends and teammates from the Bedard Black Belt center, and we all had a ball! I am so proud of everyone who competed! They did so great!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!! :) And BIG thanks to Kyosanim Dennis for going and coaching all of us!!!

St. Patricks School 2011

I always have such a wonderful time at St. Patricks School! Last year I went and did a few performances and spoke to them about achieving dreams and goals, reaching for the stars, and never ever giving up. I also told them about the words that i live by, "I can't means I don't want to". So, this year I thought I would change it up a little bit! I did 2 weapons demos to music, and this time, I talked to the kids about stranger danger and safety awareness! I think it is so important for kids these days to know about the dangers in the world, and how they can easily avoid them. like for instance (one that I ALWAYS make sure to do) never ever park next to a van or vehicle with dark or tinted windows. And if by chance your mom or dad does, get in and out of the car on the other side. After talking about strangers and stranger danger, I took all of the kids on the gymnasium floor and taught them some karate/TKD moves! THEY LOVED IT! I am so happy it went so well! There was an age ranger from k-8th grade and I got feedback that everyone had a ball! :) Can't wait to go back next year!

I am so very sorry that I have not written in so long! This year has been so busy ALREADY!

For those of you who do not know by now, I have been sponsored by KWON USA for a few years now...and this year I made the COVER of the catalog!! This came as such a surprise! Everyone at KWON have been so wonderful to me and I cannot even begin to express how much I appreciate all that they have done for me!!! I am truly living the dream! I have dreamed of being on the cover since I first began training in martial arts.

I have also been picking up more and more hours in the dojo's. I plan on hitting the tournament circuit hard this year!! I am also doing more school assembly's, motivational and safety awareness speeches, and performances/demos.

I'M TRULY LIVING THE DREAM!

A.I.M USA Tournament 2010

I always have such a wonderful time at the AIM tournaments! I did 2 performances
(one to "Let it Rock" by: Kevin Roudolf and the other to "Eye of the Tiger" by: Survivor).
I met tons of new people, caught up with old friends and watched all of the kids do their thing in the ring!
I am so honored to be a part of such a great tournament. The kids participate in not only the traditional forms and fighting, but also compete for best kick, show what you know, danger alley and walk with confidence! It is a great way to build confidence and have a great time.

CONGRATS TO ALL OF THE KIDS WHO COMPETED TODAY! You all did amazing :)

I would like to thank Dave Johnson for inviting me to all of the tournaments to perform. Like I said, I always have a great time and am thankful I am a pert of the fun!

This saturday was one of the happiest days of my life!

A few weeks back, Rob at KWON set a date, told me to invite my coaches and meet at the KWON store for a big surprise So not knowing what to expect I had ALL of my instructors and coaches from the very beginning. (Sensei Aaron Bailey, Grand Master Bong Jornales, Mr. Jason Hoard, Mushtaq Ali, Steve VanHarn, and Grand Master Marcel Bedard and Kyosanim Dennis Bedard) When we got there I swear I was more nervous than I had been in a LONG time! Then, Rob unveiled a whole new begining to my martial arts career..

Good News!! Recently I have took up TKD! I have been looking for a school to go to for quite some time to help me on some kicks when I saw Master Marcel Bedard and Kyosanim Dennis Bedard at a tournament. I had done a demo at their school a few years back so I knew that they had a wonderful school, but we had not kept in contact.
When we started talking they took the time to answer my questions, give me some advise, and "look after" me while I was there. That made all the difference. I knew right then and there that I wanted to train there. They would be the ones who would help me with not only flexibility (yes, I know I am already flexible..but I wanted to do more!) and the fancy TKD kicks, but also FIGHTING! I honestly have nothing but good to say about all of the students/families, Master and Kyosanim, and the dojo as a whole! With only training with them for about 2 months, we have accomplished so much! And WATCH OUT!, we are working on some pretty cool things as we speak!! I feel like a part of their family.

The Fighter Within

"You've got to follow your passion. You've got to figure out what it is you love--who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dream" Oprah Winfrey. Ever since I can remember, martial arts has been my passion. Growing up, people ridiculed me and put me down for doing what I loved and pursuing my passion. They stopped talking to me when I won world championship titles and told me I could never make it and make it big. Well, proving them wrong and overcoming those obstacles was not easy, but I did it. At the age of 6, reality began to set in for me. It didn't matter how much I begged or what I did, my parents were not going to drive me to the other side of town for classes. But I never gave up and I never gave in, even back then. I was inspired. Inspired to be just like the great Bruce Lee, not only in the sense that he was, by far, the greatest martial artist that has ever lived, but also in the sense that he did all he could to help others and do for those who had nothing. He was determined to change the world. As for me, I kept on my parents for 2 years until a Karate Dojo opened up right here in my hometown. The agreed to enrolled me, I saw my chance, and I ran with it!
I train an average of 5-6 days a week for at least 2-4 hours a day and I have been at it for the past 9 years. Throughout my training I have endured things that most people will never go through in a lifetime. I’m only 17. My Sensei (karate instructor) came here directly from Tennessee and was the toughest coach I have ever had. If my stances were not low enough, he would kick my legs so hard that the stance would automatically go low. If I wiped the dripping sweat from my face, I would have to do push ups until he said stop, and if we did it again it was double what we did before. Yes, this kind of training is extreme and painful, but it is what I love and what kept my drive going. I can distinctly remember at just 9 or 10 years old Sensei would fight me like he fought the other adult black belts, and it was brutal. Painful. A true test of body mind and spirit. I fell on my butt and got knocked down numerous times, and have had black eyes, bruises and broken bones, but through it all I always got back up and tried again. In competition, I've won some and I've lost some, but I always learn something. This is my passion. It's in me. I do what I love and I love what I do.
Still today, even though I have achieved amazing success, I am met with obstacles, big ones. And when I look them in the eye, sometimes it's intimidating. It's ominous. And, if I let that feeling creep in, I feel as if I’ll never be able to overcome them. And I let that feeling last for about a minute. And then I push it aside and remember who I am. But I do. I just do. For me, "I can't" is not a part of my vocabulary. I refuse to say "I can't." I don't say "I can't" because what I can't really means is, "I don't want to."
Even as a child of just 10 years old, there were those who taunted me and wanted to see me fail. Not just my peers, but adults too. Well, I proved them all wrong. The first big achievement was in middle school when I went to China to train with Jet Li and Jackie Chan’s coach, and again when I won my first 2 World titles in 2006. It wasn't always easy to dig deep, hold my head up high and keep pushing forward, but I did. And look at me now! Now, I made my very first martial arts dream come true. And I'm only 16! I am a black belt! Now, I am an 8 time World Champion and I hold many national titles. I don't say that to brag. I say that to prove that with hard work, dedication, determination, you can make your dreams come true. And I'm all the proof you need. Now, I have a new goal. Now, I will work hard to reach others and share the lessons and hard times that I have endured to inspire them. I want them to know that they can do anything that they set their mind to if they are willing to work hard and NEVER give up.
I'm a regular kid, from a little tiny town in rural Michigan. A regular kid from the midwest U.S.A. But I'm also a kid who dared to dream and dream big. I dared to work hard, look the obstacles in the eye, and I made my dreams come true, and I’m not stopping now. This is just the beginning for me.

Everybody's Got Talent!

Everybody's Got Talent @ Kellogg Auditorium - (Aug. 13th)

Just a few days before the event, I was contacted to see if I would be the special guest performer for this event. Not knowing what it was all about, I did some asking around and it turns out it was a VERY important event that I would not pass up in a lifetime. ALL of the procedes from the talent show would go to benefit the "Fun on the Run" - a community inclusive recreation program. This exciting program offers FREE, structured, neighborhood based activities at a variety of sites throughout Calhoun County. CIR staff will provide hours of FUN for youth of all ages and abilities --this mobile unit is fully equipped with hundreds of individual and team activities including art instruction, fitness training, team building and recreational options. Activities foster new friendships, explore many cultures, build leadership skills, promote sportsmanship and places emphasis on having FUN.
The event was entirely put on by kids and turned out to be a HUGE success! I had so much fun, not only performing, but meeting so many wonderful people from local kid performers to the Adults helping run the show, to the people being directly effected by this event. It was utterly moving to see how no matter how different everyone was, we all came together to help make a difference*

IHF 8th Triennial World Campionships

IHF 8th Triennial Hapkido World Championships @ Kellogg Arena- (Aug. 5th - 8th)
A few months back Master Hee Kwan Lee, USA Chairman of IHF, invited to me perform and compete at his tournament. To be quite frank, I was completely honored to be a part of this history in the making. This was the first time ever that the World Championships were to be held outside of the birthplace of Hapkido, Korea. This was truly one of the most classy and well run tournaments I have ever been to! It all started on Thursday, the 5th for the opening ceremonies of the tournament. With a dozen countries there including Korea, USA, Gremany, Italy, Mexico, etc. the pressure was on when it was my turn to perform and do my Arnis demo! After I was done and the ceremonies came to a close, ALL of the countries and teams wanted pictures with me! It was so great! Saturday and Sunday was when the nerves began to rumble, COMPETITION TIME! I competed in Womens Black Belt in the Open hand (form: Mayon) and Weapons division (weapon: Tali-Bong) representing the Jornales System, and KWON USA. There were so many great competitors in my division! The verdict....TWO GOLDS!!!! :)

Also, Saturday night I was invited out to the street party after the tournament to..TWIRL FIRE!! So many people came out and I had an absolute ball!! I did two demos and when the crowd called for an encore, I performed to music from the live band!
Through and through I had an amazing and wonderful time at the IHF World Championships! It was and outstanding event and cannot wait for three years to pass so I xan compete with the USA Team in KOREA!!

11th WEKAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

As most of you know, this past week my Dad and I flew to Mexico for the WEKAF 11th World Championships. This was my third world tournament, and my Dads very first. As soon as we got into the resort, we could tell the heat was going to be a HUGE issue to deal with as we knew we would be competing in a cement building with no air-conditioning..so we got straight to practicing every morning and night until the tournament started! And boy was that to our advantage because the heat and humidity was almost unbearable!
The first day of competition was designated for forms. I competed with the Tabak-Patilim in the Traditional Multiple Weapons division and won a silver medal, and Dad competed with the the form Bahai (the form that I used at my very first worlds in 2006!) and won the gold! But that was not the end of the day for us, we still had to do the team form competition! This was the first time ever for our team, The Jornales System, to compete in this division at the world championships. In the end, we tied with the reigning 5x world champion team, and after a show of hands we got the silver. That was such a good day!
The next day was fighting day!! (Thursday) It started with my single stick competition. This is the division that I have wanted to win ever since my first worlds, and I decided this would be the year I get the gold! (Especially for Mushtaq Ali because we have worked and worked on it!) I ended up in the lightweight division, and man o' man did I fight my heart out! I WON THE GOLD!! Soon after that I had to fight in the double stick division...my favorite!! At that point I was the reigning champion for the past two world championships and I was not about to lose that title! I fought and fought and, yes, I GOT THE GOLD!!

So in the end I took home 2 GOLD and 2 SILVER, and my Dad took 1 GOLD and 1 SILVER for Team USA!!! I am so proud of my Dad for doing so well at his first world tournament!!!

But before I close, I want to take a moment to thank all who continue to follow, support and pray for me throughout all of my endeavors. You all fuel my passion and drive and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that!

It's summertime in West Michigan and all the natives know what that means!

We kicked off this years park parties in Cedar Springs and OH, what fun it was! The WOTV park parties feature FREEEEEEEEEEE EVERYTHING! Free Food including full lunches to anyone 18 and under, Free Games, Free Rides, Free Entertainment(ME Included!) and More! What more could you ask for!

The second park party of the season was held at Lamar Park in Wyoming. This is such a nice park. They even have a water park complete with all kinds of water sprinklers for the kids to play in!

People always ask me, "What's your favorite part about the park parties?" I have to say, without hesitation, its all the new friends I meet every year and of course...I would be remiss if I did not tell you that I have made long lasting friendships at the park parties too! I always look forward to seeing the Colbert Family who you know as NEXT II NONE! I love them all right from Mom and Dad Colbert, Trent, Michael, and Durell and of course - MA GIRLS!

The next park party will be at the Barry County Expo Center on July 8th. You can look forward to seeing Jessica Price, Next II None, and lots of other youth entertainment, including ME!

The opening of the TKD Tournament

Wow! What a fun weekend!

On Friday June 25th I had the the great honor of walking in the opening ceremonies of the Meijer Michigan State Games parade of athletes carrying the American Flag! I met some awesome athletes and hung out with the Tae Kwon Do people for the evening. We watched the torch come in, carried by East Kentwood Athletes, and then the flame was lit by hockey Olympian Mike Knuble. We then were treated with a concert from American Idol's Matt Giraud!

Saturday was a great day too! I had the great honor of speaking and performing a Filipino Martial Arts Demo for the Tae Kwon Do tournament. Thanks so very much to my great sponsor, KWON USA for the referral! I made lots of new friends and got to meet amazing athletes, Masters, and Grand Masters.

It's always a great honor for me to be able to share my story with everyone. It is my hope that others can see me, know that I'm your average American girl and if I can make my dreams come true with hard work and dedication, they(YOU) can too! Dare to dream BIG, Believe in yourself, and never, ever, say "I Can't."

Hapkido Tournament

A couple of weeks ago, Rob at KWON introduced me to a very special man. His name is Grand Master Hee Kwan Lee. He invited me to perform at his World Hapkido Tournament in Battle Creek this August (please contact Master Lee @ heelee02@gmail.com if interested in competing). This Saturday, there was a pre-trial national tournament held to prepare for the World Tournament...and since I will be competing for them later on in the year, I thought I would go check it out on my way home from my performance in Detroit (see earlier post). I saw so many amazing athletes, met many Wise Masters, and even ended up performing! (Thank you so very very much to everyone who held boards for me!)

I had so much fun at the tournament and enjoyed talking to everyone!

I would like to give a very special thank you to Grand Master Lee for everything! The event was spectacular, the food was delicious, and I LOVE my new T-shirt. I am very much looking forward to continue to work with you, and very excited to perform at your World Championships this August.

Yesterday was so exciting! I was invited to perform at the 2nd Annual Metropolitan Lincoln Mercury Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fundraiser and Classic Car & Truck Show in Garden City Michigan. I had so much fun watching the Guardian Martial Artists perform...Great job guys, and enjoying all of the classic muscle cars. But most of all, I LOVED performing, meeting many wonderful people, and showing them what I do! The best part of the whole event though is that the proceeds from the show benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation! So not only was it a great day, it was all for a great cause.

A special thank you to Clarity Patton for coordinating the event and inviting me to come out and join in on all of the fun! You did an awesome job, and I speak for everyone when I say, the event was marvelous!

Thunder Bay Martial Arts April 17th

Northern Michigan never disappoints! Since I was just a little kid I've visited, spent vacations, holidays, and summers in northern Michigan. My mother grew up in Onaway and she's always made sure I was in touch with my roots.

This past weekend I was given the great honor of performing, speaking, and doing a seminar for Alpena's Thunder Bay Martial Arts. They have several school outlets across northeastern Michigan and Saturday those schools met in Hillman Michigan for the Thunder Bay Martial Arts Tournament.

Several months ago I received an email from Sensei Dan Schackmann and Mrs. Schackmann inviting me to come and share my love for the arts with everyone. Of course, you know what my answer was! I couldn't wait to get back up north. I am always excited and grateful to be able to reach out to other young people in hopes of inspiring them to believe in themselves and do great things. I hope that they will see themselves in me and know that I'm not special or gifted. I'm a regular kid from a small town. I'm one of them and I'm proof that with hard work, motivation, and determination, dreams do come true.

It was such an honor to be able to meet and speak to all those kids who have worked so hard and share my passion for the arts. I saw amazing families supporting their kids and grand kids and giving them hugs and praise and support, win or lose all of which are priceless and I say that from experience. I saw parents and students who truly understand that winning isn't everything. Loving what you do, and doing what you love is! I even got to hang out with some of my favorite fans! Zack and Raena!

Mr. Schackmann opened the tournament by saying only "WATCH THIS." That was my cue! My first performance was to Evanessence ~ Bring me to life. Fun! Not too wild, a nice ice breaker to get everyone pumped up and ready to compete. I spent the day meeting lots of fun people, taking pictures and signing autographs. At noon I got to rock the house to Motley Crue! This one was fast paced and lots of fun. Got to swing my swords, break some boards, and even broke out my sticks! Later on we went back to the dojo and spent a couple hours doing basic Eskrima stick drills, teaching some terminology, and fundamentals of Filipino martial arts. It was a great seminar. I truly enjoyed myself and the opportunity to share just a little of the art that I have come to love so very much. I thank my Grand Master Bong Jornales for sharing his skills, wisdom, and love for the art with me. I am grateful and honored to give others just a peek at what I have been so blessed to have been given. I look forward to a return visit and seeing everyone again! Thanks for a wonderful day!

Exciting news!!
Last week I was in Fremont California; And not just for fun and games. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I competed at the 2010 WEKAF U.S National Championships and team trials.
there were over 100 competitors from five regions across the United States. Here, the best fighters in the country meet to face off for precious seats on the U.S National Team that will compete against countries from all over the world in Mexico at the WEKAF 11th World Championships in Puerto Vallarta Mexico in July.

Want to guess how I did? Well, Friday was the day for forms competition and I competed with the Tabak Petalim, or hook sword and dagger. I won my first gold of the tournament and successfully defended my U.S. National title in traditional multiple weapons! Later that day was the team form competition. I am very pleased to say that, with the help of our secret weapon (a.k.a Master Bong), we won first place! It was awesome considering the fact that we put together our team form just 2 weeks before the tournament. Video is up on YOU TUBE of the Team form under Jornales System.

Saturday and Sunday were the stick fighting competition days. I ended up fighting in single stick on Saturday and fought a girl from Denver in the 16-17 heavyweight division. I ended up getting 2nd place. Also that day I did an exhibition fight with Natalie from MD, which was a lot of fun. Then, last but definitely not least, I fought in my favorite division in the whole tournament, Double Stick!! I was in the 12-17 middle weight division and fought the same girl from denver...and won!! The whole place shut down- all the other rings stopped and everyone told me that there wasn't anyone in the room that was not watching the fight. It was very intense and fast and I believe I won due to speed and footwork. I have never beaten Erin in Single Stick fighting and she has never beaten me in Double Stick-yet we continue to try! She's definitely my best competition. (Gabe Rafael told me he recalled the hotel staff walking in during my fight and asking what was going on and when he told them it was the girls fight they were flabbergasted!)
So in total I brought home 3 golds and 1 silver.

Now for the twist! My dad has been to every single class that I have ever taken. He takes me to all the seminars, tournaments, and all of my training. A couple years ago Master Bong and I started encouraging him to train. Two years ago, he picked up a pair of sticks and the rest is history. I know, it's supposed to be the other way around where I learn from him because he's the parent. In this case, he's learned from me and guess what! He entered the regional competition in Milwaukee back in October and earned the right to compete at nationals. In his first ever national tournament and only the 3rd tournament he'd ever competed in, MY DAD MADE THE US NATIONAL TEAM! He took 1st in his weapons competition, 2nd in Single Stick Fighting, and 3rd in Double Stick Fighting. "I taught him everything he knows!" hahahahah I'm just kidding. Master Bong gets ALL the credit there! Congrats to my dad! I'm so very proud of you!

Finally, it is my honor to Thank Grand Master Bong Jornlaes for sharing his love for the Philippine Martial Arts with me and for coaching me and teaching me everything I needed to win. Without him I could not have done so well, and I surely would not have accomplished what I have today. Master Bong, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Tournaments like this one are always a great reason for a little time off and FUN FUN FUN! While we were in California we did A LOT of sightseeing on the days off of competition. I got to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Sea lions, Fisherman's Warf, and...CHINA TOWN :) I was really looking forward to swimming and laying on the beach but it was a bit too cold-even in California! But all in all I had an amazing fun time.

St. Patricks School Performance

I had such an awesome day on Friday! I had the great pleasure of performing for, speaking to, and meeting all of the wonderful kids, parents, and faculty at St. Patricks School. I did a weapons demonstration followed by a motivational speech. I told everyone about my style of martial arts and it's background, a little bit about me and how I was able to accomplish my dreams, and made sure that they knew that ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD ON YOUR SIDE!! After, I answered a few questions and signed pictures for everyone and had the privilege of meeting all of the kid and signing autographs for them on everything from the pictures I brought to their shoes and shirts! :) I had So much fun and cannot wait until I see everyone again.

Mariah Moore, 16, of Alto, will perform martial arts in the "Grand Rapids' Got Talent" competition at The B.O.B. GRAND RAPIDS -- Mariah Moore says she's just an ordinary farm girl who likes to fight with sticks. But Moore, 16, passed ordinary years ago when she went to China at the age of 10 to study martial arts with Wu Bin, personal coach to Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
Since then Moore has racked up four national and world champion titles in Filipino Martial Arts and will defend her title in the national competition in March.
"I've never been a girly girl," Moore said from the family farm in Alto. "I liked watching Bruce Lee movies, and once I got started (at age 8) it's definitely been my passion."
A junior at Lowell High School who plans to open her own karate school someday, Moore is one of the area talents who will compete in a six-week "Grand Rapids' Got Talent" competition at The B.O.B.

"We've been pleasantly surprised by the great variety that have signed up," said Kelly Carey of Creative Edge Productions, which is coordinating the contestants. "We've got break dancers, rappers, all sorts of singers. It should be a community-wide event."
There are several new names among the list of contestants who have signed up to compete, Carey said. Not everyone who registers will be selected to perform, so Carey is encouraging registrants to provide plenty of information about any training or previous performance experience.
"You've really got to sell yourself," she said. "Brag."
Candidates will be selected purely on the merits of their registration, without audition, so there's always the possibility an act or two will flop.
"But isn't that always the favorite part of 'American Idol?'" Carey said.
There's also a chance of discovering an unknown gem, such as Susan Boyle, whose amazing voice stunned the "Britian's Got Talent" judges in 2009.
About 15 acts will compete each Thursday at Bobarinos on the second floor of The B.O.B., where the audience can enjoy food and drinks. Each selected act pays a $20 fee, but there is no cover charge for the audience.
"We're trying to be a little cautious with the content," Carey said. "It is an adult venue, but we expect friends and family of the contestants will be there, so we don't want anything too explicit. We want to keep it PG-13."
Audience members will vote with their wallets at a dollar a vote. Proceeds will go to Lacks Cancer Center of St. Mary's Health Care.
"We wanted to have a community feel," Carey said. "People love to help somebody out."
First, second and third places, totaling $300, will be awarded in each of the preliminary rounds. The 12 best acts will compete in the semi-finals on Feb. 24, with six finalists competing for a $1,000 grand prize on March 4.
Moore said she was encouraged by friends to sign up for the contest, and the potential prize money is a large part of the attraction.
"The prize money would definitely be nice to help my family with all the costs of international travel," Moore said. "And it's nice to get my face recognized."

Detroit D'Lux Charity Challenge

WOW! What a great day! I am very inspired and impressed with the Detroit tournament circuit. The Great Lakes Circuit tournament directors in the circuit work together to promote and support each other and it makes for GREAT TOURNAMENTS!

On January 23rd I went to the D'Lux Charity Challenge in Madison Hts. Michigan. The tournament is AMAZING. 74 Under belt division, 40 Black Belt divisions and even a special needs division! I commend Mr. Lux on making sure eveyone has a place at his tournament! I'd guess close to 300 competitors! I am told that this tournament is now a *F*I*V*E* Star event earning 500 pts. for 1st Place and 300 extra for Grand Champion!

Today was extra special to me because 1. Master Bong and Wendy Came! 2. It was my dad's very first tournament and I'm really proud of him. He did a great job and brought home some new hardware! 2nd in Open Hand and 3rd in Weapons and he had lots of people in his division too so he earned it!

I got 1st in Traditional Weapons, 1st in Open Weapons, 3rd in Open hand- Nobody likes to lose, but this time, losing was sweet! My friend NOEL LOVELESS rocked it! Congrats girl! You deserved it! Finally, My last competition for the day was for Grand Champion. Wow! The trophy is sweet and I also won some $cash$ and 2 cool Flip Your Lid and Sick T's! Thanks! Love it! Best part of all... you all know that I believe in giving back and work hard to do my part for the community. The D'Lux event gives 15% of proceeds to a different charity every year. This year the Humane Society will benefit all of us hanging out and doing what we love to do.

This was my second year at D'Lux and both times I've made great friends and had so much fun!

To accomplish what we want, we need to know what we need to know and be the person we need to be; we are where we need to be, where we have aimed our thoughts. Open your mind, be humble, otherwise you take the risk of staying where you are. Until we become humble, in our stubborn mind, we cannot profit by the wisdom, experiences and thoughts of others; there is always room for improvement.

Motivation is needed all the time we breathe and even more when we don’t trust in who we are and in what we do. Believe in yourself! Unless you have confidence in yourself, you will not be able to accomplish anything but more unaccomplished dreams and frustrations.

Blindly believe in you and in what you do and in what you can accomplish and act, regardless, even if you have the highest obstacle in front of you. The only thing that stops you from crossing, climbing or going through that huge obstacle is what you think about yourself.

The size of your self-esteem, your essence and your confidence has to do directly with the image you have about you and who you really are. Your essence energizes the movie, which plays in your mind, every time you have to cope with a task or face a challenge. It is the voice that is telling you that you will, only can do, accomplish or reach very little, or even worse --- nothing.

Thoughts create or magnetize our personality and attitude. Dominating thoughts will eventually reproduce themselves in outward physical actions and gradually transform into physical realities. The thoughts we have, from the time we wake up, will definitively determine our attitude, our day. We bring to our lives what we think about most of the time and where we guide or focus our mind, is where we end up.

Starting in the morning, we make choices. We either decide to accept negative thoughts and therefore spoil our moments and even our day, weeks or years, or we decide to plant positive images in our mind and have days full of satisfaction, happiness, prosperity, peace and all the beauties that life has for all of us.

Influence your thoughts so you will stimulate your action and you will gradually become a self-reliant, confident and successful person. Until we die, we all need motivation. Keep yourself motivated, create the habit of been motivated every day; focus, breathe, smell, laugh, dream, do, touch and hold motivation.

There are so many things for which we should be appreciative, for which we should have hope, be grateful for and therefore motivated. Talk to yourself as much you can. Imagine and feel yourself accomplishing all you want. Think about the things you already have accomplished and also the accomplishments that have brought you confidence, satisfaction and happiness to your life.

Yes, you can. There is nothing impossible to the person who has a definite and clear purpose. You are a person, so you only need a definite purpose. Every morning, every day, when you are in front of the mirror, talk to that special person in front of you and tell him/her how good, smart, valuable, capable, intelligent and loved he/she is.

Take action, If now you cannot do great things, try to do small things great. Now you may not see any door open but once you believe totally and blindly in yourself and believe that you can do whatever you decide, many doors will open for you. It doesn’t matter your background, it doesn’t matter where you are coming from, but they will not open until you get ready and it is entirely up to you. You are not defeated unless you defeat yourself.

Gratitude, responsibility, honesty and self-respect are things you must make sacrifices for because without them, you are nothing. So be respectful, responsible and honest. Be confident, have trust and blindly believe in you. Stay motivated and enthusiastic, with a burning desire to succeed. Be clear in life. Create a plan, focus only on that plan and take uninterrupted action with passion, discipline and patience. And above all, don’t worry about the results; definitively you will succeed when all the pieces of the puzzle get in their place

I just read this today and I do not know about you, but it made me think. It made me think about how God gives us each and every day. A new day. A new day to accomplish what seem to be impossible tasks, and reach those dreams that seem to be so far out of sight. AIM USA TOURNAMENT

Once again I had great time with the students and instructors of AIM USA! Owner Dave Johnson invited me to come out and do a couple demonstrations and spend the day at his tournament again this year. I have had the pleasure of meeting some amazing young, up and coming martial artists! I always love to come to the AIM Tournaments! Through performing every year, I have made and bunch great friends, and I would like to thank every one of those friends for your continued support and encouragement!
I had a really good time and really enjoyed seeing so many kids with high hopes and big dreams heading down the same road I did. This is where it all begins! For every competitor, keep training and practice practice practice! You can do anything you want to do and be anyone you want to be if you're willing to work for it, I'm all the proof you need because I'm a kid just like you!

Welcome Home Sgt. Shane Sherer! OUR AMERICAN HERO

I am so honored to have been a part of such a very special welcome home. Today several hundred grateful citizens came together at the Gerald R. Ford Intl. Airport to welcome home Sargent Shane Sherer from Afghanistan where many months ago he was hit by Taliban mortar fire and was injured near death. He had massive injuries to his head and body and was not expected to survive-yet I had the honor of welcoming him home with a hug and a thank you today. I can't tell you how it made me feel to look into this soldiers eyes and say "Thank You." Sgt. Scherer was moved to tears at the sight of all of us there just for him. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. Every media station in Grand Rapids was there and several news papers too. I think, now especially at Christmas, we all appreciate our troops even more. Sgt. Sherer has a great sense of humor too! When Mrs. Bennett introduced us, she told him I was a world champion in martial arts and guess what he said! "Just don't kick my a$, I've been thru enough!" I just hugged him and cried.

A little background on Sgt. Scherer:
May 29, 2009, Sgt. Shane Scherer was seriously injured serving in the US Army as a Calvary Scout, in Northern Afghanistan, by a mortar round. Twelve days before Shane was to return to the US, his military base was attacked by the Taliban and he was near the blast that left his body covered with shrapnel, a severed artery, severe damage to his right hand, and a major brain injury. Emergency surgery was done in an Afghanistan hospital to save his life on the severed artery and brain. The doctor in the hospital performed this life saving surgery by removing a huge part of his skull to protect the brain from the swelling, on the phone with the help of a more experienced doctor. Shane was not anticipated to live through the night. Since that night Shane has had 20 surgeries and has been recovering in Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington D.C., and the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California. Just this week he was finally released from the VA Hospital, and will be doing his out-patient recovery at the Army Base at Ft Lewis, Washington Brain Trauma Center. Shane had to wear a helmet to protect his brain until his reconstructive surgery to rebuild his skull in September. The surgery on his finger was successful and the joint was rebuilt, so his has use of his finger. The thumb has limited movement and that surgery was not as successful. Scars remain over his entire body, but not his face. Recovery has been very long and difficult, but Shane has had such a great positive and determined attitude that he has made a remarkable recovery.

He received a Purple Heart from the US Army in July. At present the Army is working on a medical discharge and after that Shane hopes to return to college to get a Masters Degree. He does have disabilities, but can walk, talk, and think, and with time we all hope he can reach his goals he has set for himself in life. Since Shane's injuries, his fiance', Jacqueline Bennett of Lowell has not worked, but instead sat by his bedside, and been there as his biggest advocate. Their wedding had to be cancelled and rescheduled for June 2010.

Shane has never been to Michigan, but will be visiting with Jacqueline, to her home town of Lowell, for Christmas.

Sargent Sherer- I hope you get to read this one day. I want you to know that it doesn't matter that I don't know you personally. I appreciate you and your service to our country as if you were my brother. Thank you, for all you've done to protect us here at home and keep us safe from the horrors you've seen and had to live over seas. God bless you always. Psalm 91:11 "He will command his angels to watch over you..."

A final thought. Take time. Take time out of your busy day to thank a soldier or veteran. It only takes a minute and it means more than you know. I saw the tears roll down the Sgts. face when he got his well deserved Thank you and "Welcome Home." They deserve so much more but this is the least we can do for them.

OH What a day. For those of you who know me, you know I never say "I can't" and I never quit. Well, I have to say, the past few days have been a real test to my constitution. I have had full blown flu since Wednesday the 14th and today is the 19th! Tournament was on the 17th - and the rules are clear. You must qualify at regionals to move on to nationals. There was no way, flu or no flu, I would go down without a fight.

On Friday I traveled to Milwaukee Wisconsin for the WEKAF Midwest Regional Championships. The car ride was a killer...but when we got to the hotel, with the help of Nyquil, I got some good rest and was ready to face the tournament day on Saturday. WOA! Was I sick. I did my form, left the ring and fell to my knees. But I made it through. Happy to say, I took first in Traditional Multiple Weapons. I had some time to rest before fighting, ate a bagel and drank some Gatorade...and took a nap until they called me to the ring. I am also very happy to report that I will keep my regional titles in Full Contact Single Stick Fighting and in Full Contact Double Stick Fighting. As sick as I was, the exhibition fight was a blast. I don't know where the burst of energy came from, but, there is tremendous power in prayer. I LOVE to perform and I LOVE to compete but I have to admit, the flu really took the wind from my sails and kicked my butt. This was a hard one...but, I DID IT. Nationals, HERE I COME!

I will be competing in traditional multiple Weapons using the Hook Tabak-Patalim, in Single stick fighting, and also double stick fighting.

NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Just this past Saturday I went to Detroit for the North American International Karate Championships, hosted by none other than Mr. Conell Loveless.
A few months ago Mr. Loveless asked me to do a weapons demo at his tournament, and of course I was in like Flynn! Well, a few days before the tournament I decided, what the heck, I'll just compete for the fun of it.
What an amazing event. There were over 300 competitors from atleast 3 states and Canada and there were over 100 divisions!
Well, I ended up competing in Traditional weapons, where I did the Hook Tabak-Patalim, and open weapons division, where I performed to the song "Bodies" by Drowning Pool using my signature, the Tali-Bong. I ended up placing 1st in both. From there I moved on to compete for one of the four spots to compete for Grand Champion. All Black Belts taking first in Forms and Weapons in all divsions competed......and I took Second, respectable, ...but not a spot I like! It lit a fire under me, and I must say, I was very motivated by the prizes. AN I POD TOUCH AND AN ENORMOUS GOLD CUP! So later that night at the nighttime extravaganza everyone in the running for a grand championship performed in an auditorium up on stage. Now, I have been to many tournaments and have never seen this before, and I definitely LOVED it! I performed between two divisions first, then 10 minutes later, I was up to compete! There were about 12 judges sitting in the very front row, hot lights above, and some fierce competition. But I performed like there was no tomorrow because this was my very first time competing as a Black Belt, and this meant the world to me. I gave it everything I had. And I have the battle wounds to prove it! Blisters on my bloody blisters and the ropes on my weapons are bloody too! (Too much information?) Sorry, I'm proud of them. It proves I work hard.
As the Four of us were standing center stage waiting for the announcement of Black Belt Grand Champion, I wasnt really sure who the winner was. I was as nervous as I could possibly be. Every single person I competed against was AWESOME. We were just different. Then Mr. Loveless announced, "And the 2009 Black Belt Grand Champion is...........................MARIAH MOORE!!!!!" I wanted to jump up and down and scream myhead off and my heart out! Still in shock, I was handed my 5 lb. trophy that is a huge Gold Cup on a glossy mahogany base! NO JOKE, ITS AS BIG AS THE STANELY CUP!...then an engraved iPod Touch! (it says :NAIKC 2009 Grand Cahmpion)
This tournament was the next best thing to the World Championships. Very classy.

NWC Print Livonia Michigan - American Red Cross BLOOD DRIVE! Volunteer! It's a great thing!

What a great day! I spent today with NWC PRINT employees and clients who were holding a very important event- A BLOOD DRIVE with the Amercian Red Cross. We took some fun photos, had a meet and greet, and I performed for everyone. The Red Cross collected the blood, and where there was resistance, I gave them a helping hand! On Labor Day weekend every year, WELCOME WOODS CAMPGROUND in Hastings Michigan celebrates Halloween in July. My Gram Rose and Papa Larry spend most of their summer out there and this is the second year now that they asked me to come out and celebrate with them. I've made some good friends out there and look forward to this event. It's always so much fun and everybody is so friendly and nice. We had a great time and also had a very special guest this year. My storyteller and Emcee, Jeff Veley. He told the amazing tale of the "Beast in the Fields of the Philippines" and the female child of a Grand Master who was born to battle "The Beast". Of course, "SHE" was ME! What a great introduction. Jeff, when I make my big break, I'm takin' you with me! Anyway, the beast was slain with fire and we all lived to tell about it! Chuck, Rose, Larry, PJ, Mom, Dad, and everyone who donated and bought shirts and cards to help me fund my trip to the 2010 World Championships, Thank You, Thank You, Thank you! I raised enough at WELCOME WOODS to pay for my USA uniform for the world championships where I'll defend my titles in July in MEXICO!

In northern Michigan, specifically Onaway, Labor Day means FIELDSTOCK! A great big ole' party in a field in the middle of no-where that goes on for about 3 days straight. I was so happy to be a part of it all again this year! I got to see lots of family and friends and a fun time was had by all! Bands come from all around and everyone is welcome and nobody pays a dime to get in. IT's a FREE FOR ALL! I got to perform a couple times, signed some autographs, hung out and even played with fire-literally! HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

8 years and thousands of hours of training, sweat, tears, trials, accomplishments, victories, honors, shortcomings, blood, and even some broken bones and it all comes down to ONE BLACK BELT!

I am so very happy to tell you that on July 25th 2009 I traveled with my family and my Sensei to Memphis Tennessee where 11 of the highest ranking black belts in Kyokushin Ro-Ken Karate from 4 states came together for my black belt test. Together they have over 250 years of experience and training that they would use to test me on my skill, endurance, knowledge, power, and overall martial ability. They made very clear to me that what went on in the test was top secret and was to be held in the strictest confidence. What I can tell you is that it was HARD. It lasted 4 hours and they covered everything. If you are taught it, you are expected to understand it, demonstrate it, explain it, and use it when appropriate. I learned a lot and I am very honored to have been tested by and in the presence of so many very special and very important people in Ro-Ken history. For example, Karen King who was one of the first women and one of only a handful of women to have received a black belt in the Ro-Ken System. Sensei Raymond Jones, 7th Dan is the highest ranking black belt in the system and I am so pleased and honored to have his appoval and blessing. My Sensei's Sensei, Chris Mahoney 6th Dan was also there and commented that he was proud of both my sensei and I and that mine was one of the best black belt tests he had seen in a long time. Also present were Tom Hook 5th Dan, David Dyer 5th Dan, James Trainer 3rd Dan, Jenny Lykins 1st Dan, Bradford 2nd Dan, Larry Web 1st Dan, Leslie Watson 1st Dan.

There is one very special moment in my black belt test that I would like to share with you. Right after I received my black belt, my Sensei's mother, my Grandma Bailey said that she had something very important to share with me. She opened an envelope and pulled out cross necklace and a card that read,

"The nights of work, the hours of hope amount at last to this day of joy. You have arrived. Let us celebrate this moment in time.

"Iah, lets have a pretend tea party, that was so much fun wasn't it? The cross is to remind you to NEVER put anything ahead of Jesus, for without him, we could do nothing! I love you Iah, Grammy

It was from my mom's mom, my teaparty grammy who died in 2005. She knew. Even back then when I was only 11, she knew. The cross was hers that she always wore. What a very special day and what a very special surprise. I think everyone cried right along with me.

Qualities you normally do not see in a ‘young lady’ who is only 15 ½ years old. Mariah’s Sensei, Aaron Bailey, was the third person that I promoted to Black Belt. I am proud to see Aaron’s, and now Mariah’s, continuation of the tradition of Ro-Ken Karate.”

I remember the first day that Mariah walked through the door. She was a small little thing that had no idea what was going to happen in the next 8 years of her life. These last 8 years has been a battle of different wars. One battle that she had was trying to find her inner self. Well on July 25^th I think she did. She achieved something that not many people do. That is getting her black belt in a very traditional martial art. She was determine to do this and she did it. I am very proud of her and very honored by what she has accomplished. She is my first student to become a black belt, and I think that I was more nervous than she was at times during the test. Mariah is a true testimony to the art, and has a very special talent in her. It has been a honor to teach you and will be more of an honor to stand next to you in class. I am proud.

What This Black Belt Means To Me

From the second I walked into my very first karate class at the age of 8, I knew the dojo was the place for me. For the past 7 years I have poured my heart into training to be the very best that I can be in martial arts. To be “good” has never been good enough for me. I have always wanted to be exceptional. Working my way through rank has taught me some very basic yet very critical life principles; Honor, Respect, Discipline, Patience, and Determination.

In the beginning, I didn’t quite understand why they were important. But now I realize that part of becoming a black belt is realizing that these principles are very important in understanding the true heart of the martial way. I have learned that what may not seem important one day may be the essence of life the next.

In life, I am determined to make a difference, and I will. I love to help others succeed and fulfill their dreams. I believe that with one good deed at a time, we can change the world. My martial arts have given me priceless skills which I continue to use to help others. I dedicate countless hours to women and children’s groups giving motivational speeches, performing and demonstrating martial arts and teaching self-defense. I could not have done this without the lessons I learned while earning rank. It is an honor to be able to use the sport that I love so much to help others. The confidence that I have gained and the respect that I have earned for myself and for others is priceless. Implementing change demands passion, discipline, drive and determination. All of the characteristics I believe you will find in a true black belt.

Martial arts have been my passion and my life for as long as I can remember and I will always aspire to learn more and accept the challenges before me. For instance, learning two new katas just two weeks before one of the most important day of my life was very stressful but, as I have been since I was six years old, I remain determined to earn this belt and I am committed to doing whatever it takes.

By learning to be patient, to pursue my passion with determination, discipline, and honor and following the drive in my heart, I have been very successful in martial arts and now today, I stand before you realizing my very first martial arts dream. Testing for my Black Belt.

Now, more than ever, I am certain that this black belt means something different to me than it does for most, because I believe most consider the black belt the end of the journey. Now, seemingly at the end of my journey, here testing for my black belt, I know without question that this is not the end of a process for me. Rather, it is just the beginning. It is a passage into a new level of determination, drive, patience, discipline, honor, and respect.

As most of you know, I have dedicated the past 8 years to my martial arts career. As an 8 year old walking into my very first karate class, I knew right then and there that I wanted to become a black belt one day. Well, that day is finally approaching. This Saturday with my Sensei Aaron Bailey I will be testing in front of a board of Roken karate instructors in Memphis, Tennessee. This, for most, would seemingly be the end of their journey in martial arts. Well, for me this is only the beginning. This is, in essence, the door surrounded in light at the end of the hall that leads to somewhere bigger and better.
I plan to keep sharing my knowledge with others because I believe that with one good deed at a time we can change the world. And for me, that good deed is teaching martial arts and self defense to women and children, and use the skills that I have learned throughout my training to inspire and to motivate people to be the very best that they can be and to reach for their dreams, no matter how big they may be.
I will be sure to keep you updated and will post pictures of the end ceremony after the test.

WOTV WOOD TV WXSP PARK PARTY WITH MARANDA IN MUSKEGON!

What a fun day! I am very excited to have been asked to perform at the park parties with Maranda again this summer! It's always lots of fun and a great opportunity to meet and talk with lots of new people.

I started this one with a bang...Motley Crue's Kickstart my Heart. Roundoff Back handspring, Tuck, then backhandspring tuck and then Chains, Broadsword, Karit, Board Breaking, Talibong, and of course the attack! Thanks a bunch to my stuntman Jeremy Wiersma for making the drive out to Muskegon so I could throw him around a little. We always have a lot of fun! The second one was a risky move but I think I pulled it off thanks to Phalesha Keyes-Best choreographer ever! I did a hip hop mix and even threw in some dance moves and some stunts. Working out with Randy Owens(Gymnastics Coach) has really paid off big!

One of the highlights of my day is always getting to hang out with my friends, Next II None. they are a hip hop boy band from Kentwood with the same "get it done" attitude and drive that I have. They're going places and nobody deserves it more.

ALTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On Tuesday May 26th, I was invited to head out to Alto Elementary School where I went from Kindergarten through 5th grade. I had a great time performing for the 3rd-5th Graders and got to meet the students and see my teachers again. First came "Nothin' but a good time" with Swords, Karit, Hook Sword, Talibong, Chains and more.

Then I had the opportunity to talk to everyone about believing in yourself and never giving up, no matter who or what gets in your way. I told the kids that only good things come from hard work and that anything is possible if you work hard and never give up. I also aksed the teachers to pour their hearts into their students because they have big goals and big dreams and they are listening... I was listening when my third grade teacher said I could do anything I wanted to do and be anyone I wanted to be if I worked hard and never gave up. Thanks Mrs. Hanson! And when Mrs. Vensas hugged me and said, "Keep trying. You can do this. I know you can." And when Mr. Mac said, "You are special and you will do great things one day." I'm glad I had the chance to thank the teachers from elementary that believed in me and encouraged me to reach for the stars! Look at me now! And the best part, I'm just getting started!

I closed out the show to Motley Crue's "Kickstart my Heart" and a little help from Jeremy Wiersma, the best stuntman in the world. I swung swords, ropes, Karit, Talibong, broke boards and then came Jeremy! He took my staff, did a back flip off my face, and of course, I could not let him get away with that. We fought, I flipped him, and rubbed his face in the cement. It was great fun hanging out at my old school! Thanks Alto Elementary! See you again soon!

Dreaming bigger, working harder, and NOT GIVING UP!

To everyone who was cheering me on for America's got Talent; I got the call back, they said the travel department would call me to make arrangements for me to go to LA on April 8 and 9, but they never did call. Like a few other's, I was put on standby. This is not surprising if you think about the odds. They auditioned over 5,000 in Chicago alone(where I auditioned) and considering the fact that only about 2 of the best of the best and 2 of the worst of the worst(so they can make fun of them) from each city will make it, I AM VERY EXCITED JUST TO HAVE GOTTEN A CALLBACK AT ALL. Of course, I'm disappointed, but sometimes it's good to have a reason to work harder. Yesterday I got another email from AGT stating that the were sorry they could not move more people off the standby list and said that auditions were over for season 4. They asked that I come back next year and try again. My dream is to do film work and my own stunts. AGT is one way for me to get noticed. But, it's not the only way. I am planning to do a professional demo video this summer so that I can audition more often(by sending the demo out) and also, get more exposure on the web.

I'm not giving up. Not making the final cut the first time is only a real good reason for me to come back bigger and better next year with some fresh new ideas, a new costume, and this time, I'M NOT HOLDING ANYTHING BACK! I have some tricks up my sleeve and I'll have a another big year of training with Master Bong, Sensei, Randy Owens, and my new friend-FIRE! I will continue to train 5-6 nights a week in Arnis, Karate, and Gymnastics.

My schedule for the summer is nearly full already with WOTV/WOOD TV Park Parties with Maranda, My Black Belt test in Tennessee!!!! YAY! Modeling for SWMCC, and West Michigan White Caps. I'm saving some time this summer to be a teenager too. I want to go up north and hang out with my family, go to the beach with my friends, and try to make some $$$$ babysitting-hint hint ;0)

The Day I met Grand Master Bong

This was one of the very best days of my life. This is the very competition where Master Bong sat as my judge and I performed the broad sword form I learned from Grand Master Wu Bin(Jet Li and Jackie Chan's Coach). It was this day that Grand Master Bong Jornales invited me to come to his Jornales System seminar. I went to the seminar and the rest is history, but still in the making! Grand Master Bong has coached me to 4 World Championship Titles. He's the best in the world. Period!

I want to share these pictures because they are very special to me. This was my first ever Martial Arts Award. My Sensei Aaron Bailey presented me with the KIA Award which was the first ever in his school and it was given to the student who showed the most passion, heart, and drive. It was given at our Annual Ro-Ken Karate Banquet in June 2003. This was only the beginning!

Just a quick note to let you know what's happening with AGT. We did not receive a phone call from the travel dept. at AGT last week, but did get an email from the producer yesterday. She said she was sorry that it did not work out for me to go to LA this week and that they have me on "Standby." She also said that she would let me know when she had more information. For those of you who are watching and wondering about America's Got Talent, I am patiently waiting for more news. As you may know, I got the initial call and I was told that this was a preliminary call and that the travel department would call me to make arrangements. I don't know what AGT and God have planned for me, but I'm looking forward to it. And, I do know that the producers have an incredible job to do and that there are thousands and thousands of amazing acts for them to consider and they are doing the very best job they can. I am very happy just to have gotten the initial call. I felt very good about my audition, and I am putting this in God's hands. I promise I will let you know just as soon as I know anything. Once again I had great time with the students and instructors of AIM USA! Owner Dave Johnson invited me to come out and do a couple demonstrations and spend the day at his tournament. I met lots of new people and saw some friendly familiar faces too! So glad to see the Redding family again! Hope Mr. R comes thru with that song list for me! hint hint! This time, I brought a special treat for everyone. JEREMY! He's my "official" stuntman. He does work for film and TV and everyone loved the backflip he did off my face! (That was payback for me kicking him in the head at practice the night before I think!) It's all good! We had a really good time and really enjoyed seeing so many kids with high hopes and big dreams heading down the same road I did. This is where it all begins! Keep training and practice practice practice! You can do anything you want to do and be anyone you want to be if you're willing to work for it!

What a BLAST!

A couple months ago a martial artist friend of mine, Craig Marks, told me about a tournament in Detroit. He said it was a lot of fun and that I should give it a shot. He also let me know that it's for a great cause-charity. I think they sponsor a different cause every year and donate a percentage of the proceeds to that cause. This year it was Scoliosis. If you've been here much, you know that I am very passionate about helping others who may not be as fortunate as me and about having a compassionate heart and spirit. Mix that with the love of martial arts and competition and ITS ON!

I WAS AMAZED! The place was packed and I mean completely packed in, and you can see from my pictures that there was STANDING ROOM ONLY!
It was so interesting to see so many different styles, schools, colorful uniforms, and a wonderful ethnic mix too. We saw Wushoo, Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and lots and lots more. This year, they got to see ARNIS!
I have to admit, it was a bit stressful for me because they do things a little differently on the east side of the state. When you register, they give you cards for each event and you have to listen for your event very carefully because when it's called, you take your card to the ring, give it to the judges, and that is your pass to compete. If you're not there-You miss out. I was glad mom was there to help me be where I needed to be. Dad had Noah and were running the camera. Things were pretty calm for the first hour or so...then I really got put to the test but here's where I can thank Master Bong and Sensei, and Mushtaq for the conditioning because it really paid off. I was called to ring 2 for Traditional Weapons. That went great. I had about 8-10 competitors. Bow Staffs, Scythe, Single Stick(but a style I did not recognize), and me with Sickles. I performed Sagasa San Got, it went very well. I took 1st. Then, the game was on. I was almost immediately called back to ring 2 for Forms. While I was waiting for my turn, they called me in ring 1 for Open Weapons. Since I was last to compete in a field of maybe 12 in Open Hand Forms, they said to go to ring 1 where I would be the first competitor in Open Weapons. There I did Sayow to "Let the Bodies hit the Floor" by Drowning Pool". That was so fun! Loved having the music to pump me up and I think the crowd liked the Tali-bongs! Mom said that corner of the gym was packed by the time I finished. I don't know because as soon as I bowed at the end of my form, the scorekeeper from ring 2 commanded that I get there now because I was up. I didn't even get a minute in between, I ran straight from performing in ring 1 to doing Mayon(Open Hand form), in ring 2. OH MAN was that hard. I had a hard time catching my breath because of the vocal cord dysfunction, but I "sucked it up", took a deep breath, said a quick prayer...and went for it. There were about 12 or more competitor in Open Hand. Lots of really good and interesting competition. Too bad I didn't see a lot of them because the second I was done with Mayon, I was being called back to ring 1 for judges call. I am very happy to tell you that I took 1st in Open Weapons. Thanks Master Bong! I owe it to you. I am very grateful to have you, sharing your wisdom and knowledge with me. I'm not sure Detroit has seen a lot of the Philippine martial arts...but I think they really liked it. NEXT! As soon as I shook the judges hands, I was called back to ring 2 for judges call there. WOW WOW. 1st in Open Hand! YAY! But my story is not done yet. I was just beginning to settle down a little and I went up to t he front to get my trophies and guess what! They called me back to ring 2 to to compete for BLACK BELT GRAND CHAMPION! I know, you're asking, "Why Black Belt Grand Champion, when I'm a Brown Belt?" Well, In the Open Weapons competition, they did not have a division for under black belts so they told me if I wanted to compete, I'd have to move up and compete with the Black Belts. So I did. Since I got first, everyone who took first in any black belt event was eligible to compete for GRAND CHAMPION. So I did.-
So, less than 10 minutes after competing in open hand and open weapons, I competed for BLACK BELT GRAND CHAMPION. There were so many awesome martial artists. There was a girl with a bow staff that was incredible. I performed Sayow again to music. (A very special THANK YOU! TO JEREMY FOR RUNNING THE MUSIC FOR ME!) I think they really like seeing something different- I love Philippine Martial arts! I had so many people asking, "What Style is that!" "What is your school?", "Who is your teacher?", "Where are you from?" "What weapon is that?" It made me very proud and at the same time very grateful and honored to say, "It is Philippine Martial Arts, called Arnis and I train with Grand Master Bong Jornales in Holland Michigan." I really believe that the Philippine martial arts do have a place in open competition and we need to make that voice heard. The only way to do that is to go and compete. Let them see what we do-get their respect the good old fashioned way-earn it. I know, it's very frustrating that there is no stick fighting in open events which is the core of what we do, but the way to get there is by going and doing and letting them know that we are out there, we are fierce competitors, and that the PHILIPPINE MARTIAL ARTS deserve the attention and respect. With Fight Quest, a lot of eyes were opened. By Blogging, eyes are opened. We can also open eyes by competing, performing, speaking, writing articles, etc. I would encourage Pacific Island Artists to take the steering wheel and DRIVE!

Thank you Detroit D'Lux Charity Tournament Director Adam Lux, tournament officials and judges, and competitors-for having an open mind, open heart, and true martial spirit. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to compete in a fun and ALL STYLE friendly event. I made many new friends and I think I introduced some to the Philippine Martial arts that they never knew before.

Christmas Season....

This Christmas season has opened my eyes and just taught me some things that i would like to share with you.
Well, as you all know, i live a very busy life with all the martial arts, school, and just teenage life in general. At times, things get really stressful, and it is so incredibly important to not lose sight of what is really important.

1. God
2.Family
-then
3.you're hobby (martial arts)

So, we start with #1. God. I can tell you that i believe 100% that i could not be who i am today without god on my side. He walks with me, he lifts me up and gives me everything i could possibly need. But at the same time, i work for him. I teach his ways, and i preach his name. I want all of you to know that with GOD with you, you can do anything, and be anybody that you want to be. You just have to trust in him.
Now i know that some of you are saying.." i have prayed and prayed, and nothing has happened". Well, God has a plan, and all things happen for a reason, and in time, at the RIGHT time. He WILL answer, and miracles will happen.

Now, we go to #2. Family. I can tell you one thing. I have the best family in the whole world! I couldnt ask for better. They all put aside time, and they ALL help me accomplish my dreams. My mom does the P.R work, and gets my name out and in the papers and news. My dad takes me to all my classes, seminars, and all around the world for tournaments. And, last but not least, my little brother is always there encouraging me, he goes to all of my performances and tournaments.....and of course he tells all of his little friends " dont mess with me! my sister is a 4x world champion!!" :D and thats always gives me a laugh!
So, as you can see, my family plays a huge role from just a little 8 year old farm girl, to a world champion. They are always here for me, no matter how hard or stressful life can get.

I guess i just want you all to know that without God and my Family, i could not have done this. I owe it to them for keeping me going, and going strong.

A Thankful Thanksgiving!

Isn't it amazing how God always has a plan and he puts it in place even before we have a clue .

A long long time ago when I was just starting out in martial arts I competed on the same local martial arts circuit as Craig Marks. Mr. Marks is now an instuctor at Gerald R. Ford Job Corp. To make a long story short, Mr. Marks was recently reading about me on the internet and invited me to speak and perform at Job Corp for his students. When I was there, I was introduced to Jean Pierre- a truly amazing human being who is beautiful, inside and out despite the difficulty life has presented him with.

We always have a houseful on Thanksgiving. Mom cooks too much, we all eat too much, get fat, and have lots of fun! This year was no different. We had all the usual crowd, but this time, we added someone very special. Everyone, Meet Jean Pierre! He is from Rwanda-Africa. When he was very young he lost most of his family to war. He came to the United States as a refugee when he was sixteen but really doesn't have a family. Well,it wasn't long and little brother took care of that! Noah has always felt outnumbered by the girls in the family. Even the cats and dogs are girls! He has always wanted a brother. After they hung out together for just a little while, it was unofficially official. Noah had adopted Jean Pierre and Mom wasn't far behind! Now he has a family, and we have a big brother! We're all Thankful to have Jean Pierre!

One thing leads to another and it all happens according to what God has planned.

I think you can see where I'm headed with this!

On Tuesday, I had the honor of performing for and speaking to the students and martial arts family of Bedard Martial Arts Black Belt Center. It is a family owned and operated school. Grand Master Marcel Bedard, Mrs. Bedard, and 2nd Degree Black Belt Dennis Bedard are clearly dedicated to teaching all ages and especially children through positive interaction, reinforcement, and encouragement. I was invited to watch their very first belt testing in the new school and I was so impressed with the way in which each student was treated. Traditionally, proper technique is critical in early testing. Here, students are praised for their courage and confidence and for finishing what they started. Masters and teachers praise each individuals strong features and teach and direct without the pressure of unrealistic expectations. It is recognized when students do their very best and make the effort and try. Do not misinterpret what I'm trying to say. I think we can all agree that there are many "McDojo's" out there that turn out black belts like McDonald's does burgers because the focus is on quantity not quality. Bedard Black Belt Center is not one of them. With the wisdom of Grand Master Bedard to lead them, they are achieving something wonderful. They build amazing athletes with incredible skills (trust me! I saw for myself!) through positive and gentle instruction. Every student took something positive away from their belt testing. Every student felt more confident, more capable, and excited to learn more. A very strong sense of "Family" runs through the Bedard Martial Arts students, instructors, and their families. I wonder if the students and families know what a wonderful gift they have in the patient, gentle wisdom of Grand Master Marcel Bedard and his family. I can't wait to introduce Grand Master Bong Jornales and Grand Master Marcel. Different styles, same gentle yet powerful ways.

PS...I think I forgot to mention the young yellow belt students who jumped several people in a flying side kick to break a board held by Instructor Dennis Bedard all in a very confined space. I WAS STUNNED AND AMAZED at the skill level and control! I won't say "I can't do this...but I will say, I haven't learned this yet!"

Thank you to everyone at Bedards, for sharing your first testing and your martial arts family with me. I look forward to seeing you again in January!

On Friday Nov. 14th, I had the amazing honor of hosting an assembly for Jared Sweet. Jared is a 7 year old first grader at Murray Lake Elementary School(Lowell Schools) with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Together, with the help of the Lowell HS JV Cheerleaders and The Kids on Jared's Team at Murray Lake Elementary, we had an awesome time. I performed twice and got to introduce Jared and talk to over 450 kids, parents, grandparents, and teachers about Jared and his fight against Muscular Dystrophy in an effort to create awareness and help raise much needed funds for research to find a cure.

He may be small, but Jared is the toughest, strongest and bravest boy I know. He's fighting a horrible terrible mean disease and he needs our help.
I know I can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone and one of my favorite things to do is to use the gifts that I have been given to help others, especially kids like Jared who need our love and support the most - it feels good to do my part and you can too!

What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy? Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year). Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys; however, it occurs across all races and cultures. Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs.

There is no cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Chicago- Pacific Island Arts Tournament with Grand Master Nene Tortal and Grand Master Bandalan!!!

What an honor! Today I am very pleased to have been in the company of some very amazing and very respected legends in the Pacific Island Arts. Even better, when the tournament came to a close, all the Grand Masters and tournament judges came together to vote and decide on one person who would be "Top Dog!" To qualify, they chose only those placing first in every one of their entries.
I placed 1st in Forms, 1st in Stick Fighting, and 1st in Knife Fighting.
And, against all odds, the only female in the entire tournament- THEY PICKED ME!
The prize was priceless and I will treasure it always! Grand Master Tortal presented me with his personal sword! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Girls! Remember when I posted a few months back and encouraged you to come and test your mettle here? This is why. This tournament is a small yet very clean and very fair event. If you can compete, YOU CAN COMPETE.
Thanks Guru John- For the invite. Thanks to all the judges and to Grand Master Tortal and to Grand Master Bandalan for believing in me. I had an amazing time and I am honored to have spent the day with you.

What a blast! Today I went downtown Grand Rapids and met some amazing and very special people.

You never know who's watching so always do and be your best!
Back when I was about 8 or 10 years old, a man by the name of Craig Marks traveled the local martial arts circuit at the same time I did. He remembered me competing and winning a lot of weapons events. Then about 6 months ago, he read about me online and followed my journey through the World Championships and read about my community service work. When I got home, he sent me an email and we hit it off and he invited me to speak and perform at the Gerald R. Ford Job Corp where he is a teacher. He said he was a little nervous about whether a 14 year old girl could handle it. HMMM. That sounded like a challenge I couldn't resist!

I prepared my "Speech" , I practiced my lines, I polished my performances...I was ready to inspire!

Guess what? The tables were turned and I got inpired! I met some very cool people. I can't tell you how amazing it is to look into the eyes of others who have incredible obstacles in their lives and see someone willing to work hard to make things better for themselves. These are people who have had very difficult very hard lives and they are making a difference. They are taking control of their lives and their own destiny. They are not taking "NO" for an answer. They are making things happen for themselves, inspite of it all. If you you're reading this and you know of a 16-24 year old that needs a chance-to get their GED and career training along with housing and food-send them to the Gerald R. Ford Job Center. This is a program for people who just need a chance to prove themselves and an opportunity to learn and grow. I found out they have all kinds of programs all over the country. The one here in Grand Rapids has a Security Division, Culinary Arts, Contracting, and more!

Anyway, I had a lot of fun. First I performed, then gave a motivational speech(I think everyone liked it too!) Then I did one more performance. I got to tour a little of the facility, saw Mr. Marks Security Center and then had breakfast with the student government. Thanks Dennis for a great breakfast and to everyone who helped prepare it! Quiche, bacon, danishes...OH MY! YUM!

I am very sad today because I just heard that Parker's cancer might be back. He is very sick and isn't getting better and his eye is drooping again. He had several tumors before and one was behind his eye and caused his eye to droop before. This cancer is a horrible monster. He can develop tumors in days. He just had a scan about a month ago and it was clean. Please pray for our baby boy because he's in for a whole bunch of tests and stuff and we need him to be cancer free!

I have done several gathering/seminars with Guro Bednarski and have also had the honor of competing in the Pacific Island tournament now known as the Nagasulong. What a blast! I CAN'T WAIT! This event is incredible and it is a great step forward in promoting and encouraging the way of the Filipino Warrior. I have some new friends in Michigan that practice FMA and I am very excited to share this event with all my FMA Friends and competitors. I've been to so many tournaments that are the same old same old: The judges are not familiar with the style and just plain don't understand or appreciate the Filipino Style. This is not one of them. The Nagasulong event has the benefit of some very skilled and very knowledgeable and World renown Masters(like Master Buzz, Guru Mushtaq Ali, and Guru Bednarski and Multi World Champion Guru Steve Van Harn...and I am very honored to finally be able to meet and learn from Grandmaster Nene Tortal!) Nagasulong does not discriminate or restrict anyone because of age or sex either. If you can compete, YOU CAN COMPETE! And I'm proof! I'm a 14 year old Girl and Last year I took first in the Women's knife fighting event but they didn't make me stop there. I only had one competitor and I was really wanting and needing a good challenge. So I competed in the men's event and in the Men's stickfighting event! I wasn't treated special or different or gently...just EQUAL. Nagasulong is an event for everyone...including WOMEN. If you're looking for a challenge and some good, clean, tough competition with educated and qualified judging, this is your opportunity.

OH, and the best bonus ever! Don't expect another trophy for your collection....if this is anything like last year's event, those who place are in for a real treat and possibly a new best friend(for those of us who love weapons- hint hint)

I hope the Grand Champion event will also cover weaponry because I'm going to BRING IT!

Local martial artist wins world championship in Philippines

Mariah Moore of Alto recently captured a world championship in Eskrima, which was a demonstration sport in the Beijing Olympics.

ALTO -- While athletes from around the world are competing in the Olympic Games, Mariah Moore of Alto is also focused on the Gold. However, though her sport is a demonstration sport at the 2008 Olympic games, Eskrima is not yet recognized as an official sport of the Olympic Games.

From a very early age, Mariah Moore knew what her destiny was. She wanted to do martial arts. She began asking to do karate at the age of 6. At just 8 years old, she was enrolled in Ro-Ken Karate, and by the tender age of 10, she had traveled to China to train with the coaches of Jet Li and Jackie Chan. By 12, she was a two-time world champion.

Now, at just 14 years old, Mariah has made her hometown proud as the defending world champion and official member of the prestigious U.S. National Stickfighting Team competing at the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation 10th World Championships in Cebu, Philippines. For now, internationally, this is the highest level of competition there is for the sport of Eskrima.

Eskrima is the pride of the Filipino culture. It is to the Filipinos what baseball is to Americans.
It's what hockey is to Canada. And Cebu is the central hub for one of the most globally-feared systems of stickfighting in the world today: Doce Pares, the legendary "Twelve Pairs" system of Filipino stick, knife and empty hand combat. The system is based on point-scoring, but knockouts and surrenders are just as common at the master levels.

In July, 25 countries from all over the world met to test their mettle against the best fighters the world has to offer. With more than 600 competitors from around the world, the United States brought the largest delegation with 110 athletes.

Moore has earned a very befitting nickname. She is the "Eskrimadora" from America. When her name was called to perform, there was a rush of people to the stage. Could the light-haired, fair-skinned girl with the unassuming smile and the eyes of a doe really house the heart of dragon?

"The pretty girl stereotype comes to screeching halt when they see me fight, and actually I think it's an advantage because they never see it coming," Mariah said.

In her first area of competition, Traditional Multiple Weapons, Moore performed "Sayow"(to Dance) with her Talibong (Double Swords on ropes). She made her presence known as the swords flew and returned to her hands effortlessly as if an extension of her being. The judges' decision was unanimous, with Moore taking the gold for team USA and her third world championship title.

Later that evening, Moore competed in the Full-Contact Single Stick Fighting event. Still suffering a touch of jet lag and sleep loss through most of the first day of competition, her timing was off. She hammered through her first rounds in single-stick fighting, pushing through the eliminations until it was down to Moore and her USA teammate from Colorado, Erin Michaelis. In a 2-1 split, teammate Michaelis edged Mariah out for the gold medal.

With a day off in between the single- and double-stick events, Moore and her coaches used their time to study and evaluate the competition. The strategy worked and the payoff was sweet, but victory would not come easy. In the final round of eliminations, three contenders remained; Two from America and one from Australia. In a draw of cards, the Australian won the "by" round, leaving the two Americans to face each other once again. This was the same pair that had battled for single-stick silver and gold.

"(Erin) made it a point to tell me that she had studied my fights from regionals and nationals, and that she had trained all year just to beat me. That irritated me. I don't train like that. There aren't many girls who do this and I am the only one in Michigan, so I train with men that are sometimes a foot taller and outweigh me by 70 or 80 pounds. I think it gives me an advantage because I'm not intimidated by size, and I train to win by technique, speed, and power," Mariah said.

With a grudge and a smile, the Michigan farm girl was ready. As the reigning world champion in this event, double-stick fighting is what she came here for. It is a different animal, requiring a whole new level of skill and consciousness than single-stick fighting. The sticks clashed in a fury and the Colorado fighter was taken back by the force and accuracy behind Moore's strikes.

In the finals, Moore burned through three continuous rounds of double-stick combat. Moore disarmed and even broke one of her sticks on the body of her Aussie opponent. At the final bell, there was no hesitation: Mariah Moore, at 14 years of age, was now a four-time world champion.

"I really wanted to make my hometown, my family, and my country proud. I trained so hard for this and to know that I fought the best fighters in my weight class that the world had to offer and I won makes all my hard work so worth it. I couldn't be happier," Mariah said.

As the reigning world championship team, Team USA dominated the 10th World Championships, taking 44 gold, 35 silver, and 30 bronze medals. The Philippines came in second with 35 gold, 18 silver, and 19 bronze. The United Kingdom finished in third place with 12 gold, 11 silvers, and 15 bronze medals, while Australia wound up in fourth with 10 golds, three silvers, and eight bronze medals. Canada rounded out the top five with four golds, nine silvers, and five bronze medals.

August 22, West Michigan Whitecaps Game!

What a fun night!

I was asked to perform at the West Michigan Whitecaps game last night and it was the BOMB! I went on right before the game started and had a blast. The crowd loved it. I could hear comments from the stands, "I wouldn't mess with her!" There were several martial arts schools there. One was Standale Karate. Rick Heath is Sensei there and, he has been one of my judges on the local circuit many times. He stopped by to say "Hi" and said he couldn't believe how much I grew and I think he was surprised to see me do all those weapons! Anyway, I met some new friends and ate some Nachos and Popcorn and it was a great fun night! Noah was a little bummed that he didn't catch a Whitecaps Ball but he did get his picture taken with Crash and that made his day. This was my first baseball game and I have to say, they really go all out to make it a fun experience for everyone, especially the kids! They slung hotdogs into the stands, had contests, played music, and had kids throw out most of the first pitches.

I worked and trained so hard for this event, in all sincerity and with complete respect, I believe I earned my medals. This makes me really sad.

Team Philippines failed to bring home the overall championship in the 10th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation Championships, bowing to powerhouse United States at the tournament’s final day yesterday at the Ayala Center Cebu Activity Center.

Despite playing on its home turf, Team Philippines could not make the most out of the golden opportunity to take back the title it last held eight years ago, as it ended up with just 35 gold medals, 18 silvers and 19 bronze medals.

The USA, on the other hand, finished with a flurry, ending up with an astounding 44 golds, 35 silvers and 30 bronze medals to achieve a rare three-peat.

QUESTIONABLE

After starting off with 20 medals during the forms or “sayaw” competition, Team Philippines managed just 15 more gold medals in the tournament’s final two days.

Mere whispers of questionable judging at the start of the tournament turned into a deafening statement as the Supreme Grandmaster himself, Atty. Dionisio Cañete, rued the spotty officiating in this year’s tournament.

“It was the worst that I’ve seen. Kung dili lang jud ‘ta host, gubot jud siguro kaayo ni,” said Cañete in an interview yesterday.

He also regretted the fact that there were seven events that did not have any entries from the Philippines since the records of the players who were supposedly joining those said events were lost by the coach.

“Those were very strong players, medal hopefuls in fact. It was really a case of negligence and spotty officiating,” he added.

It was a fact that was not lost on expatriate Scott Slezak, who did his part by winning two gold medals for the country. “We didn’t fill enough divisions. In doing that, we were giving away precious medals.
And we need to make the judging clearer because some fights were very one-sided,” explained Slezak.

Cañete however, offered no excuses for the country as he admitted that the USA came ready to fight and defend their title.

The USA’s white-hot finish was anchored on their dominance in the sparring events, where they captured 12 gold medals in the single-stick division and then added three more in the double-stick event.

The setback did not dampen the host’s hopes of reclaiming the championship at the next World Championships, slated in Mexico City in 2010.

The United Kingdom finished in third place with 12 golds, 11 silvers and 15 bronze medals while Australia wound up in fourth with 10 golds, three silvers and eight bronze medals. Canada rounded out the top five with four golds, nine silvers and five bronze medals. Correspondent Jonas Panerio

My World Championship Weapons Competition.

Well, as all of you know I just got back from the Philippines for the WEKAF 10th World Championships. While I was there I reached my dreams and beyond and won 2 Golds and 1 Silver. The Golds were in Multiple Traditional Weapons, and Full Contact Double Stick Fighting. I got the silver in the Single Stick Division. The competition was tough this year more than my last worlds because it was in the country that the Art originated, the people of the Philippines are great at what they do. In order to win the gold in double stick fighting, I had to first fight an American girl from Denver (Erin) who was much bigger than I. After I won that round, I had a bit to rest then went back at it with a girl named Bonnie from Australia. Both the girls were good, but i wanted it more, and i trained my heart out to go there and WIN! (thanks Steve for reminding me abt. that!) While it was amazing to win the world championships, touring the country was amazing too. While there for three weeks we went all over with GM Bong who led the way. We saw places like Bohol, Cebu, Manila and Boracay. I saw things that would just blow you away. In the Jornales System, we have a form named Mayon, after the largest volcano in the Philippines. We went there and saw the exact thing that had inspired GM Bong to create that form! It was amazing, we went more than half way up the huge mountain and we just in awe. The view was breathtaking yet shocking at the same time. From there you saw how far apart the towns really were and to know that the people from there have to walk everyday to work for at least 5 miles. We also saw the tarsier, the worlds smallest monkey and got to hold and feed them, swam and snorkeled in the coral reef where the water could easily pass as glass because it is so clear. There I saw all the tropical fish, the beautiful coral, sea snakes, eels, starfish, and much much more! I also go a horrific sun burn while snorkeling. And for those who were wondering...YES I did eat Balot (2 to be precise). It was not my favorite thing in the world. Neither were the tiny feathers in my teeth afterwards - but it was not BAD. I am very glad that I took the time and had the guts to try the cultures delicacy and what they like to eat.
So being away from my Mom and Brother for three weeks, I was a little homesick at the end and I was glad to be home this past Tuesday. Little did i know, my mom had pulled together a whole bunch of my friends and family and they all met me at the airport as i got off the plane and they all chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A! over and over! ( they even announced that i was a world champion over the airport intercom!) Then, the next day we took a ride downtown Lowell, and we saw like 5-6 signs with my name on it saying congrats. The support of my small community is just amazing! Everyone cares so much and so many people are behind be cheering me on and it makes it all worth while!

BUT, thats not all!

On Saturday my Sensei's wife Jamie took me out to get my hair and makeup done at the salon for a gift to me for winning (which was AMAZING!!!), and then we headed to my house to bring me home after a long night of babysitting and helping with the garage sale :). But again little did I know, it was all a big set up. My parents had put together a big huge surprise party for me! There had to be 150-200 people there! I had a blast and I performed on the fly for everyone, but it was the best night a girl could ever ask for! We had a pig roast dinner, a bonfire, and FIREWORKS! Everyone was there to support me and congratulate me...and it felt amazing to know how many people are really truly behind me! Then, my 6 girlfriends and I slept in a tent in my backyard and everything was just the best! So, before i bring this to a close, I have to say thank you to everyone who helped me, believed in me, and kept me in your prayers! I could not have done all of this if it were not for all of you wonderful people! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everything you do for me! God Bless YOU!~

FOLLOW UP - PATHS NOT TAKEN

Enter a young farm girl from southern Michigan. Expose her to Filipino Martial arts, then stand back and watch as she runs with them. This path she has taken ( in a different direction than when she started out) has found her in the seat of the Filipino arts. She is now "IN" the Philippines and has placed well against FMA artists from around the world and from many different instructors.
I am glad that she made the first step to train with Bong Jornales, an old tournament buddy of mine. And being exposed to many different FMA and IMA instructors has given her a number of venues to follow. I am glad that she didn't take the easy path and decided to just follow Karate. She has excelled in FMA- I am proud. Mariah Moore- you have just started, don't be afraid to follow your heart and defend what you belive in. Don't doubt that you are capable of accomplishing anything you set your mind to. This is a good lesson for those of you who just sit back and take it easy. Chances are- if you don't know where you are going- you will NEVER get there.

Paths not taken can leave a big hole in your life and a lot of- " I should have....." when you are wiser.
